Minneapolis School Finder provides parents access to objective information about every school in the city
Third edition of book and online resource respond to interest in understanding school options for Minneapolis families; includes information on 27 “changing-the-odds” schools
Minneapolis — The third edition of the Minneapolis School Finder, a collaborative effort that helps families make empowered, informed decisions when selecting a school, is now available across the city. Ten-thousand copies of the newest Minneapolis School Finder are being distributed through community partners.
Also accessible online at MinneapolisSchoolFinder.org, Minneapolis School Finderincludes objective, reliable information about 142 district, charter and independent schools in Minneapolis and nearby cities that serve a large number of students who are residents of Minneapolis, including academic performance, demographics, preschool information, graduation rate and more. This unique resource is unlike anything else offered in the state.
Non-profit MN Comeback created and released the resource guide working with three-dozen community organizations. Since the first edition was released in 2017, more than 26,000 copies of the Minneapolis School Finder will have been shared with families across Minneapolis.
Minneapolis School Finder provides relevant information so parents can find schools that are the best fit for their kids. It includes factors parents may want to consider when choosing a school, such as school climate, hours and transportation. It also recommends visiting schools and asking questions, such as “How can your school accommodate my child’s learning style and interests?” and “How are you connecting academics to real-life skills?”
“Every child learns differently – one size does not fit all when it comes to education,” said Rashad Turner, director of community engagement for MN Comeback. “There are high-performing schools in Minneapolis where students are seeing two times the growth and four times the proficiency levels of our city’s low-performing schools. We need more great schools in our city that can meet the academic, cultural and social email needs of students. With the School Finder we are giving parents tools to find the best possible option for their kids. We are honoring them as advocates and opening up a conversation about finding schools that are the right fit for every student.”
“When parents have good, reliable information, they can make decisions that are best for their children and their futures,” said TaShonda Williamson, Minneapolis parent. “Choosing a school can seem like a difficult or anxious process. That’s where Minneapolis School Finder was a blessing. It showed us great options in our city and provided the tools to understand more about the schools in our area and ask questions, so our family felt good about the school we chose.”
MN Comeback has a network of Family Advocates who work with Minneapolis families to provide engagement, outreach and support to parents. These Family Advocates provide one-to-one support to assist parents in navigating the educational system to ensure their child is in the best learning environment.
The guide includes a list of 27 “changing-the-odds” schools that have demonstrated success with families from underserved neighborhoods. These schools are changing the odds for students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds – their test results indicate a strong academic program is in place and works well. These “changing-the-odds” schools can be found across Minneapolis.
