Beating the odds

Last week the Star Tribune published its annual story on schools “beating the odds.” These schools are doing significantly better than predicted, closing belief and achievement gaps to prepare kids for any post-secondary pathway.

Absent school quality transparency from our city or state, we applaud efforts that empower families with accessible, contextualized information. Kudos to those making the list:

Reading and math

  • Armatage Elementary
  • Friendship Academy of the Arts
  • Global Academy
  • Hennepin Elementary School
  • Higher Ground Academy
  • Howe Elementary
  • Lake Harriet Lower Elementary
  • Twin Cities International Elementary School
  • Ubah Medical Academy

Reading only

  • Excell Academy Charter
  • Hennepin Middle School
  • Minnesota International Middle School
  • Southside Family Charter School

Math only

  • Burroughs Elementary
  • Hale Elementary
  • Kenny Elementary
  • Yinghua Academy

(Bold designates schools that serve a high population of students on Free and Reduced-price Lunch.)

More schools like these are possible. It requires academic and cultural improvement strategies that are unique for each school community and schools that invest in parents as partners.
